What Questions Should I Ask My Wedding Videographer Before Booking?!

Did you just get engaged? Congratulations!

Now starts the fun of wedding planning. You’re going to get to see all of the amazing vendors that are out there, and start to put together your wedding dream team. Sometimes this process is stressful and sometimes you can get overwhelmed with all of the buzzwords, marketing terms, and everything else.

No worries!

We have been fortunate to talk to thousands of couples throughout the years and tell hundreds of amazing stories for the coolest couples on Earth. Throughout that adventure, we’ve gotten to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly — when it comes to wedding planning and finding your wedding videographer.

So — we want to help!

We put together a list of questions that we think all couples should ask when they’re looking for their wedding videographer. These questions were put together from an insider’s perspective. Hopefully these questions will help take some of the stress out of your wedding planning journey.

What is your style when it comes to posing or directing?

This is an important question because you’re going to want to make sure your videographer and your photographer have complimentary styles. You never want to put a team of vendors together where their styles clash. Try to set your team up for success — That way you get the best from both vendors!

What is your turn around time? How long do we have to wait before we see our film(s)?

As you talk to different wedding videographers you’re going to notice that the amount of time you have to wait to see your films is drastically different. There are some studios that deliver the week after your wedding and there are some that take 10+ months. There is no right or wrong answer — just make sure you know what to expect!

Will you be at my wedding or do you send a team member?

Some studios have multiple teams that they send out to weddings and some only take on one wedding a day. You’re going to want to know if the person you’re dealing with during the booking/planning process is the same person that you’ll be hanging out with on your wedding day. There is no right or wrong answer here — it’s just nice to know what to expect.

Do I get a second videographer or is there just one person?

This is a great question, as having 1 or 2 videographers may impact your timeline and how the day flows. Our general rule of thumb is that you should have equal videographers and photographers. This way your whole day runs smoothly and you don’t have to sacrifice anything.

Do we have to choose hours or are your packages full day?

Everyone does this part differently. Often your videographer is at the mercy of your photographers timeline. That means making sure you have enough hours booked to cover everything you’re going to need is important. Some studios book by the hour and some offer full day coverage. Make sure you know what you’re getting. There is nothing worse than getting your timeline back 2 weeks before your wedding and realizing you have to spend more money to add on more hours.

Do we have any say in the film or picking the music?

Some studios allow their clients to have a role in picking music and dialing in the vibe of their film. Some studios do not allow any input. There is no right answer here, but you’re going to want to know what to expect from the beginning. After all this is your wedding film, this is the way you’ll remember your wedding day for the rest of your lives — you have to love it, right?

What comes in our package?

Some wedding videographers have pre-designed packages and some have A La Carte options — where you have to add everything on. You’re going to want to know exactly what to expect on the day of your wedding as well as what will be delivered after the wedding. There is nothing worse than thinking you’re getting something — only to realize you have to pay extra for that. Make sure you know what’s in your package.

What’s not as important as many believe?

Plot twist!

In many of these guides from bigger publications you’ll see questions or things mentioned that may not be very important. At least not from an insiders perspective. Let’s talk about some of those.

How long have you been in business?

This one is a toss up. Yes, you 100% want to make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate business that you can trust. But length of time in the wedding industry does not equate to more quality, better customer experience, or a more trustworthy business. Some of the best wedding videographers in the world have been doing this the least amount of time. This is art — there isn’t a traditional corporate ladder. More time does not always equal more quality. So don’t stress too much over this.

Did you go to school for this? Do you have training?

As someone who did go to school for this and has a formal education in this field I can 100% say — that’s NOT important at all. This is art. You do not need an education in this field to be amazing. This is not a question to stress about.

Look at their work, look at their portfolio, look at their reviews — Do you love what you see? That’s all that matters.

How many wedding do you do a year?

This is both important and not important. It’s not important because often the better a studio or the better a wedding videographer is — the less wedding they do per year. That’s not always true but often it is.

Although, this could be an important questions for another reason. You want to make sure your wedding videographer is not taking on too much work to the point that they can’t deliver your film on time.

But again, we don’t believe this is something worth stressing out about.
